Music To Write To

29 03 2011

I’m very particular about the music I listen to while writing.  I love music that tells a story—especially concept albums—but if an album is too heavy on the lyrics, it breaks up my writing pattern.  So with rare exceptions of a few (metal and rock) artists—Ozzy Osbourne, Kamelot, and Tom Waits mostly—I prefer writing to soft or lyrically unobtrusive music.  Electronica, techno, trance, and the occasional indie artist.  Here’s a list of what I’m currently listening to for my nightly writing rhythm, in no particular order.

Armin Van Buuren – A State of Trance 2008
Burial – Untrue
Daft Punk – Discovery
Daniel Tildwell – Echoes of the Elders
The Decemberists – Castaways, The Crane Wife
DeviationsPROJECT – The Ivory Bow
Digitalism – Idealism
DJ Shadow
Feist – The Reminder
Javier Navarrete – Pan’s Labyrinth
Joy Electric – Ministry of Archers
Kamelot – Epica, The Fourth Legacy, Karma, Poetry for the Poisoned
Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin IV
Ozzy Osbourne – The Ozzman Cometh
Pet Shop Boys – Discography
Portishead – Portishead, Sour Times
Sensory Creatures – The Contemplation, Soundscapes For A Better Tomorrow
Stars – The Five Ghosts
Tom Waits – Beautiful Maladies, Bone Machine, Frank’s Wild Years
Warpaint – Exquisite Corpse

What are some of your tunes?  What music gets the creative flow going for you?

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and which cannot remain silent.”
-Victor Hugo
