The Clock Ticks for Writers

1 12 2010

The clock is ticking.  It’s always ticking, and it won’t stop for a long time.  And when it does stop, it’ll be too late for you to go back and do what you always wanted to do.

I’ll keep this week’s post short.  Mostly because I’m writing this at 1:48 a.m., but also because YOU need to get back into the real world and start writing.

The funny thing is that, although writing has been my actual job for several years now, I still seem to have to fight for time in which to do it. Some people do not seem to grasp that I still have to sit down in peace and write the books, apparently believing that they pop up like mushrooms without my connivance.
-J.K. Rowling, Best Selling Author

As writers we face an exercise in self-discipline.  Ironic I know, but true.  This important exercise is one of time management.  Whereas most people have daily hours keeping them accountable to their physical workplace, we as writers have a terrible amount of freedom as to our own “work.”  We have too much time to write, so we get distracted and don’t write at all.

Either that, or we write on the side of our day job and don’t seem to have enough time to cram in a chapter of writing.

This is where the road gets tough.  Do you have what it takes to get tough and distance yourself from the rest of the world long enough to get your book written?  Eventually you will have to get up out of that desk chair and start promoting yourself to the world, and you shouldn’t let your passion neglect your loved ones.  But the fact of the matter is that writers write.  Now, look at where you stand.  When you have the time and the ability, are you writing?

Don’t answer!  And don’t just sit there!  Go write!  If you have the time to read this, you have the time to write.

As J. K. Rowling learned, books don’t just pop up on your shoulder, waiting to be published.  And look where that piece of wisdom got her.  So go, get to it!
